One of the biggest prospect phenoms of the last 20 years is ready to hang up his cleats.

According to a report by the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty and Barry Svrluga, Washington Nationals 2019 World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg is planning to officially announce his retirement at a news conference scheduled for September 9.

Strasburg has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career, but the final blow appears to be a bout with thoracic outlet syndrome in 2021 that lead to a surgical procedure which removed a rib and two neck muscles.

Since signing a 7-year, $245 million extension with the Nats prior to the 2020 season, Strasburg has thrown just 31 and 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old who had made three separate attempts to ramp up to pitching this year before making this decision.

He will finish his career with a 113-62 record with a 3.23 ERA and 1723 strikeouts, pitching his entire career for the Nationals.

The right-handed pitcher was a phenomenon out of San Diego State University, with his high-flying fastball and nasty breaking pitches getting him selected first overall in the 2009 MLB Draft.

He quickly worked his way up the minor leagues, including a five-start stint with the Harrisburg Senators in 2010, before making his MLB debut in electric fashion against the Pittsburgh Pirates, striking out 14 in seven innings.

After putting together a strong career, his peak came in 2019, leading the Nats to the franchise’s first World Series title, going 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA against the Houston Astros.

According to the Post, the financial implications of his retirement are not yet known, although players typically reach settlements with the team. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports t hat Strasburg’s contract will be paid.
