Mary “Peg” M. Ludwig

Jun 01, 2023Jun 01, 2023

Mary Margaret (Peg) Ludwig nee Zufelt formerly of Kiel, died on July 10, 2023, in Manitowoc.

Peg was born Feb. 17, 1930 in Sheboygan to Jerome C. Zufelt and Eileen F. (Locklin) Zufelt. She graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1948. Thereafter she studied art at St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On Dec. 17, 1951 she married Donald H. Ludwig of St. Paul who she had met the summer of 1946 while playing tennis at Vollrath Park in Sheboygan. After Don’s discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1952, Peg and Don moved to Kiel where they raised their family of five children.

Following Don’s retirement, they relocated to South Padre Island, Texas, where Peg lived until July 2022. Peg treasured her time on “the island” with its sun, diverse flora and fauna, the sand and sparkling gulf waters.

Peg was a busy mother, an active member of various bridge groups, Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, Our Lady Star of the Sea in Port Isabel, Texas, and the AFS group in Kiel. She enjoyed nothing more than the company of good friends and her family, and relished a good bridge hand. Peg cherished her travels with Don. Among the places they would explore were Ireland, Sweden, France, Italy, Alaska, Iceland and New Zealand.

Peg is survived by her children, Kate Ludwig of Manitowoc; Peter (Bia) Ludwig of Winchester, Virginia; Teri (Steve) Kruk of Lima, New York; David (Mary) Ludwig of Sheboygan; and Patrick (Ruth Seeger) Ludwig of Palmetto, Florida; seven grandchildren, Matthew Turner, Andre (Toni) Ludwig, Tais Ludwig, Kate Kruk (Brian Spindler), Anne (Chris) Kruk Simon, Austin Ludwig and Madeline Ludwig; and two great-grandsons, Henry Spindler and Martin Spindler.

She is further survived by her very dear sister-in-law, Trudi Ludwig Boese of Sheboygan; her six Zufelt nieces and nephews, Jerry, Nancy, Colleen, Michelle, John and Jim; and her three Ludwig nieces and nephew, Heidi, Carol and Michael.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband Donald; her parents; and her brother, John N. Zufelt.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 15, at St. Clement Catholic Church (707 N. 6th St., Sheboygan). The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 10 until the time of Mass at 11.

Burial will then immediately follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan.

Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Angelus Senior Living Community in Manitowoc, and the Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Team for the thoughtful and compassionate care provided to Peg and her family.
